Maybe You Should Talk To Someone - Book Recommendation

Maybe You Should Talk To Someone - By Lori Gottlieb

I know when I've come across a really great book when I cannot wait to get to bed in order to pick it up again. I devoured this book in around 3 weeks - a feat when you have two tiny babies, a 9-5 and only manage to read a couple hours a night at bedtime.

This book takes us on our journey of exploring several different lives, the traumas suffered, the highs experiences and the lowest of lows, trying to make sense of the personalities that were shaped as a result of the realities faced. What sets this book apart is Lori's ability to so accurately depict the range of human emotion and human vulnerabilities we all face in our lives, despite the wild differences in circumstances we all may have. When reading it, I almost felt I was curled up on the couch with a good friend, that is how relatable and warm Lori's approach is. She invites you into this world where you are forced to look at your own behaviors and connect the dots between events in your own life.

It is uncomfortable when someone puts a mirror in front of you and asks you to describe what you see, the good and the bad. And that's in essence what this book does. It reminds you of all the series of events that got you to the point where you are right this very second. It makes you question your beliefs, understand the behavior of often difficult people around you and it increases your capacity for empathy, when you realise that underneath all the layers, we really aren't so different.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and highly recommend it to those searching to understand who we really are and why we do the things we do.

I can't recommend this book enough and I know I will keep coming back to it - there is so much wisdom on those pages.
